November 2004 – an incredibly rare, invaluably precious diamond was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by an anonymous donor. The Moonstone, of uncertain provenance, comes to the Museum amid much controversy – though never officially documented as such, it is rumored to have been stolen from a Hindu temple in India by a British army Sergeant in the late 1850’s. After making the gem part of the permanent collection, and the centerpiece of a special exhibition, many strange things began to afflict the Museum. The chain of odd events ended with a quintuple murder combined with the theft of the Moonstone in late December, 2005.
Per the instructions relayed to the Museum by the anonymous donor, a private investigator firm (Markov, Cuff, and Wattz) should be employed to retrieve the gem, in the case of its theft. Party members will be part of the team put together by Detective Lucia Amartan, the great-granddaughter of the eccentric Dr. Steitz Markov.
